BCAA’s - key for maintaining and building muscle

When training hard and sticking to a low-calorie diet, you’ll find your body will crave energy and over time can enter into a catabolic state. Your body can start to breakdown muscle protein as a source of energy, resulting in a loss of muscle mass. Taking BCAAs can be used as a workout aid.

BCAAs refer to three of the essential amino acids: leucine, isoleucine and valine. Our body can’t produce BCAAs naturally on its own, so we get them in food and additional supplements. The supplements come in two forms, capsules and BCAA powder . Which way you supplement it into your diet is based upon your own personal preference. Here, we look at the main BCAA uses:

Before workout

BCAAs are the building blocks of protein. BCAA tablet or powder can be taken as a pre-workout aid.

After workout

The rate of protein synthesis needs to remain higher than protein breakdown to prevent a muscle loss. Protein helps to maintain and build new muscle. BCAA tablets or powder can be taken as a post workout aid to help you make the most out of your training plan.

Similarly, when supplemented before bed on an evening, and first thing on a morning, BCAAs can help to provide your body with additional amino acids.
